The Pharmafile Brief

October 2026 – The Pharmafile Brief

Welcome to the October issue of The Pharmafile Brief, where we bring you the latest developments and conversations shaping healthcare, life sciences and pharma.

This month we focus on respiratory disease, exploring how changes in the way healthcare is delivered are reshaping the route from pharmaceutical innovation to patient care.

Our lead article by Dr Louise Ryan Murphy of ProAxsis examines how biomarker-led diagnostics are reshaping respiratory medicine, focusing on chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) where lack of biological uniformity has made exacerbations difficult to predict. We also include Five Facts about COPD, ranked one of the leading causes of death worldwide, with a large percentage of cases being smoking related.

Alison Trundle and Martin Cassidy of Sanofi provide a very practical example of how partnership and collaboration between their company and the University Hospitals Birmingham Severe Asthma Team made a positive difference to respiratory patients, in this month’s article from the EHP (Excellence in Healthcare Partnerships) Awards.

The importance of such initiatives is underlined in our article on the alarming low rates of clinic attendance by people in their forties. An Imperial College London study reveals more than half this age demographic have failed to attend NHS Health Checks that might prevent undetected conditions worsening in later life.

The importance of communication and delivery in bringing treatments and therapies to end users is our second theme, starting with Camunda healthcare solutions manager Natosha McNeal. In a short Q&A, she spells out how a background in tech and marketing has driven her appreciation of AI regimes that are not only efficient but place the patient first.

Finally, we look at how agentic AI could create more effective dialogue between commercial sales operations and healthcare professionals and patients. Now face to face communication has lessened says Veeva’s Chris Moore and HCPs rely more upon AI information, sales operations need to improve their insights into customer behaviour for a better service.

In the news round-up, the respiratory angle continues… with AstraZeneca reports encouraging phase 3 trial data for tozorakimab in reducing moderate-to-severe exacerbations in patients with COPD. The company has also won EU approval for Trixeo Aerosphere as a maintenance treatment for asthma in patients aged 12 and older in certain circumstances. Meanwhile, a global health coalition calls for greater action by governments to tackle pulmonary disease.

Among the recent appointments, Alcami appoints Will Isom to head its lab services sales, Steven Facer takes up the reins as CCO at Codis and CRO FibroFind recruits Professor Andrew Fisher as its new chief medical officer.

We hope you enjoy the return of The Pharmafile Brief, and look out for the next issue in November.
