The Philippines is set to imminently seal a deal with AstraZeneca for two million doses of AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine, it has been reported.
Carlito Galvez, vaccine tsar for the Government of the Philippines in charge of the country’s COVID-19 response, confirmed the government’s intention to sign a tripartite deal with the Big Pharma firm this Friday for two million doses of its vaccine, co-developed in partnership with the University of Oxford
Separately, ASEAN Business Advisory Council Chairman Joey Concepcion told Reuters that the nation’s private sector will be aiming to procure a greater pool of doses than this. The sector will donate half of its procured doses to the government, but which companies that have committed to this are not clear.
As AZ’s vaccine candidate is delivered in two doses, the two million doses covered by the deal will be enough to inoculate one million of the country’s 108 million Filipino citizens against the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
AZ, meanwhile, has signed deals for over three billion doses of its candidate, which showed an average efficacy of 70% and as high as 90% in recently released interim analysis data.
Beside this impending deal, the government is also pursuing vaccine doses of candidates from SinoVac and Pfizer/BioNTech.
