Pakistan registers cases against 200 pharmaceutical companies

The Punjab Quality Control Board has sent at least 74 cases to the drugs courts for prosecution, and has overall registered cases against 200 pharmaceutical companies.

It was acting on a report from the National Task Force, which had been formed by the Drug Regulation Authority Pakistan to ensure regulation of both the Drug Act 1976 and DRAP Act 2012. These two laws combine to regulate the sales, storage and distribution of drugs at a provincial level, while the manufacturing registration, pricing, import, export and monitoring comes under the federal government.

The National Task Force has so far sealed 23 pharma units across the country. During inspections over the last two months, 23 medicine units including 21 herbal and two allopathic units in the city were sealed. 130 samples of herbal, allopathy and nutraceutical were collected by drug inspectors and sent for analysis.

Multiple health organisations, including Pakistan Pharmacists Associates and the Drug Lawyers Forum, have welcomed the recent clamping down and believe it is a step in the right direction.

The Pakistani pharmaceutical industry is rife with corruption, which is indicative of the country as a whole. In 2011, the Transparency International Report ranked Pakistan 134th out of 182 on the global corruption scale. 2019 reports indicate that Pakistan has only got more corrupt in the subsequent years.
