Samsung Biologics launches bid to acquire peptide CDMO PolyPeptide

Samsung Biologics has launched an all-cash public tender offer to acquire PolyPeptide Group in a deal valued at approximately CHF1.46bn, expanding its capabilities in peptide-based therapeutics and contract manufacturing.
Under the proposed transaction, Samsung Biologics will acquire 100% of the peptide contract development and manufacturing organisation (CDMO), subject to shareholder approval and regulatory clearances. PolyPeptide’s Board of Directors has unanimously recommended that shareholders accept the offer.
The acquisition would broaden Samsung Biologics’ manufacturing portfolio beyond antibodies and antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs) to include peptide active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), an area experiencing rapid growth driven by increasing demand for obesity, diabetes and oncology therapies.
Peptide medicines, including glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) therapies, are playing an increasingly important role in the treatment of chronic diseases, creating growing demand for specialist manufacturing capacity.
John Rim, Chairman of the Board of Directors and CEO of Samsung Biologics, said: “This acquisition reinforces our long-term growth strategy by not only broadening our service portfolio with modality expansion into peptides including GLP-1, but by also boosting our geographic reach and proximity further within the US, Europe and India.”
PolyPeptide operates manufacturing and development sites across Europe, the US and India, with more than 70 years of experience in peptide API production and over 1,000 therapeutic peptides manufactured to date.
Peter Wilden, Chairman of the Board of Directors of PolyPeptide, said the transaction would provide “a transformational opportunity” to accelerate the company’s strategic ambitions while creating a stronger global partner for customers.
Samsung Biologics said the acquisition would strengthen its ability to support pharmaceutical companies developing peptide-based medicines, while expanding manufacturing capacity for a rapidly growing area of drug development. The transaction is expected to complete towards the end of 2026.
