President Donald Trump has said he will not accept money from pharmaceutical companies in the run up to the 2020 elections.

Speaking at the Rx Heroin and Drug Abuse Summit in Atlanta, Trump said the industry “should be held accountable” for the role they played in the opioid crisis as he declared that he would not accept campaign contributions from pharma.

“My administration is also taking aggressive action to reduce the oversupply of highly addictive prescription drugs,” Trump said.

“Because we are holding big pharma accountable. They should be accountable. And they didn’t give to my campaign, I don’t want their money. They gave to a lot of other campaigns, that’s the problem…I couldn’t care less. They’ve got to do what’s right”

The claim comes amid heightened scrutiny towards the pharmaceutical industry from the Trump administration.

Having made lowering drug prices a central feature of his time in office, the criminal charges against Rochester Drug Co-operative have come as the first of their kind. Meanwhile Trump has declared the opioid crisis a public health emergency.
