Managers need training too

Most of us recognise that personal training and development is an essential requirement for successful career advancement, but for many of us, training is only undertaken in the early stages of our careers.

The level of training and development available very often drops off as an individual is promoted into more senior roles. This may be a result of time pressure, or a matter of training priorities within a broad team, but this can be especially problematic for those approaching the 'management crossover' – where their role will soon shift towards managing others and away from their own functional role.

In many cases, individuals are required to take on a new role without additional training or development, and while the transition may be within a familiar area, it is often accompanied by a strong shift in emphasis. This may include portfolio considerations, or an increased level of strategic focus, which may not have been part of the skillset learned in other previous marketing roles.

As Alvin Toffler, the highly influential American writer and futurist said, "The illiterate of the 21st century will [be] … those who cannot learn, unlearn and relearn."
