Merck Manual now available for iPhone, The Best of the Net shortlist kicks-off with Google Docs Vs Spotify Vs Dropbox and the Health Care Social Media Europe group takes on campaigning role.

The latest consumer edition of the respected Merck Manual healthcare information series is available for the iPhone and iPod touch via an app developed with Agile Partners.

Merck promises it will help users quickly find information, enable them to share topics via email and bookmark their favorite subjects.

Described by editor-in-chief of The Merck Manuals Dr Robert Porter as “perfect for today*#39;s on-the-go consumers of health information&quot, a healthcare professional version of the app is also available.

The shortlist is out for .net magazine’s Best of the Web awards 2009. These celebrate the best in web design and development and this year the 17 categories range from Design Agency of the Year and Mobile Site of the Year through to the Infamy Award.

Web Application of the Year pits Google’s online documents, against music streaming service Spotify and Dropbox’s secure backup system.

Google pops up again in Innovation of the Year for its Chrome browser (along with fellow browser Opera Unite and search engine Wolfram Alpha).

Meanwhile Facebook, Internet Explorer 6 or Outlook are all up for the considerably less-coveted Infamy Award. All the winners will be announced in December.

The Health Care Social Media Europe (#hcsmeu) group is working to expand its activities from online discussions and actual meetings to activism through a new campaign.

The group wants to promote the adoption of social media across Europe in order to improve quality, access, value and effectiveness in healthcare delivery to patients.

As part of this the group aims to lobby administrative bodies and governmental agencies to provide clarity and transparency at a regulatory level. A presentation of the draft mission statement, its text and a list of signatories are available online.
