Sterling Pharma Solutions has completed a multi-million-pound expansion of its dedicated bioconjugation facility in Deeside, Wales, doubling manufacturing capacity and increasing batch scale to 500 litres.
The expansion includes a new Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) manufacturing suite with a 500-litre reactor and a 1,400-square-foot Grade C cleanroom. The facility can handle highly potent compounds with exposure limits down to 0.05ng/m³ (OEB 5), using both flexible and hard containment technologies and single-use bioreactors.
The Deeside site supports discovery, development, scale-up and manufacturing of antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs) and other bioconjugates, including antibody-oligonucleotide conjugates, antibody-protein conjugates and radio-chelators.
Sterling has also added a 3,400-square-foot analytical development laboratory, increasing high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC) capacity. New equipment includes UPLC-LC/MS, particle imaging, protein stability characterisation and automated ultrafiltration and diafiltration systems, alongside dedicated space for cell assay development and analysis.
Andrew Henderson, President EMEA and Chief Commercial Officer at Sterling, said the additional capacity would allow the company to support larger batch sizes and development programmes through to phase 3 and commercial manufacturing.
The company said the new manufacturing suite is immediately available for customer projects.
Sterling also operates ADC capabilities at its Wisconsin facility, including linker-payload development and manufacturing, with partnerships covering antibody production and sterile fill-finish. The company said these capabilities allow it to provide development and manufacturing services across the ADC supply chain.
Sterling operates six facilities in the UK, Ireland and US and employs more than 1,350 people.
