CeramTec has opened a 12,000m² extension at its Marktredwitz site in Germany, adding around 5,000m² of production space for ceramic components used in hip and knee replacements.
The new facility includes cleanroom technology and measurement equipment for the manufacture of medical technology components. CeramTec said the expansion would increase production capacity and strengthen supply security as demand for joint replacement products grows with an ageing population.
The company invested a high double-digit million euro amount in the expansion, with construction beginning in September 2023 and production starting in phases during 2026. The facility is the third medical technology production building at the Marktredwitz site and has been designed to accommodate further expansion and automation.
“This investment is not only about additional production space. It is about technologies that can help patients regain their mobility,” said Dr Carla Kriwet, CEO of CeramTec Group.
Marktredwitz is CeramTec’s largest site, employing around 800 people. Alongside medical technology, it manufactures ceramic components for industrial applications including semiconductors and piezoceramics.
CeramTec also highlighted its experience in orthopaedic bioceramics, reporting that nearly 30 million ceramic components under its BIOLOX brand have been delivered worldwide since 1974. The company said its manufacturing history, together with scientific studies and clinical data, forms the basis of its “Trusted Evidence” approach to product performance and quality.
Kriwet said the investment represented a commitment to maintaining medical technology manufacturing in Germany, citing the combination of technology, quality and experienced personnel at the site.
The company develops and manufactures advanced ceramic components for medical and industrial applications, including orthopaedic and dental implants.
