Welcome to the September issue of The Pharmafile Brief, where we bring you the latest developments and conversations shaping healthcare, life sciences and pharma.
This month we focus on the NHS and primary care, exploring how changes in the way healthcare is delivered are reshaping the route from pharmaceutical innovation to patient care.
Heading the September contributors are Chloe Williams and Sarah Ellson of life sciences specialist, legal firm Fieldfisher, who hone in on that essential question: how do you translate promising science into NHS approved treatment? Innovative therapies providing new hope for patients, must navigate regulation, health tech assessment and funding decisions before adoption. And our Five Facts focuses on how the NHS and primary care environment is altering the route by which innovation reaches end users.
We also examine the importance of putting community voices at the centre of access to innovation, in a Q&A developed and funded by Gilead Sciences and featuring its Vice President and General Manager UK and Ireland, Peter Wickersham.
Applying innovation depends, among other things, upon the generation of usable clinical trial evidence. Dr Richard Graham of TruTechnologies asserts that too little attention is being paid to getting the execution right. Sample integrity, incorrect patient instructions, unresolved queries all contribute to an enrolment protection challenge, he says.
Technology is, of course, central to implementing innovation and AI has created an extra dimension to the process, explains Dr Anton Yuryev, Consulting Director of Bioinformatics and Data Science at Elsevier in a Pharmafile interview.
There’s a manufacturing dimension too, with Mettler Toledo’s Adam Green explaining the contribution that factory x-ray inspection makes in ensuring the success of pharmaceutical and medical device production.
