Well Pharmacy has announced a partnership with Alzheimer’s Society aimed at improving support for people living with dementia and their carers through community pharmacy services.
The collaboration will focus on training pharmacy teams, increasing awareness of dementia and improving signposting to support services available through local communities.
The initiative will include Dementia Friends activities, colleague training programmes and community engagement projects designed to help pharmacy staff feel more confident supporting patients and families affected by dementia.
Community pharmacies are often among the most accessible healthcare settings for people seeking advice and support. The partners said the programme aims to make interactions within pharmacy settings more informed, supportive and accessible.
Andrew Caplan, Chief Retail Officer at Well Pharmacy, said community pharmacy teams regularly support people affected by dementia through long-standing relationships built within local communities.
“For many patients, carers and families, pharmacy teams are familiar faces they see regularly and people they know they can turn to for advice, reassurance and support during what can often be one of the most difficult and emotional periods of their lives,” he commented.
Well Pharmacy operates around 650 pharmacies across the UK and provides services including prescription dispensing, vaccinations, health checks and Pharmacy First consultations.
Michelle Dyson, Chief Executive Officer of Alzheimer’s Society, noted that community pharmacy teams were often one of the most accessible healthcare touchpoints for people living with dementia and their carers.
“When dementia changes your life, getting the right support can make all the difference,” she stated.
“By working together, we hope to reach even more people who need practical advice, emotional support and guidance for the best next step.”
The organisations said the partnership would also support volunteering, fundraising and awareness initiatives as part of wider efforts to improve access to information and support for people affected by dementia.
