Vetter, a contract development and manufacturing organisation (CDMO), has begun construction of a new pharmaceutical manufacturing site in Saarlouis, Germany, focused on production of injectable medicines.
The company said it plans to invest almost €500m in the facility before operations begin in 2031. The first construction phase will include a 50,000 sqm manufacturing site with laboratories, warehouses and cleanrooms for aseptic drug production.
Initially, the facility will include three cleanrooms designed for filling pre-sterilised syringes and vials used in complex injectable medicines.
Vetter said the expansion is intended to help meet growing demand for injectable drug manufacturing capacity, including increasingly complex drug products requiring sterile production environments.
Once operational, the site is expected to create between 400 and 500 jobs, with the potential for further expansion over time.
Udo J. Vetter, Chairman of the Advisory Board, said the investment would support the company’s long-term manufacturing capacity and continued growth. He added that the new site would help Vetter expand production resources for international pharmaceutical customers.
The company said it is continuing to invest across production facilities in Germany, Austria and the US as market demand grows.
Regional officials in Saarland said the project would strengthen the area’s pharmaceutical manufacturing sector and support future employment opportunities linked to advanced manufacturing and life sciences.
Jürgen Barke, Minister of Economic Affairs, Innovation, Digitalisation and Energy of Saarland, added: “An advanced technology investment of this kind positions us as one of the most sought-after locations for the pharmaceutical industry and demonstrates how transformation succeeds: with new, sustainable jobs and a strong, future-oriented industry.”
