AstraZeneca continues to forge agreements with national governments to deliver its vaccine against COVID-19, with Spain becoming the latest country to place an order for the potential prophylactic therapy.
The nation has sealed an agreement with the pharma firm for 31.6 million doses of the vaccine, to be delivered sometime between December this year and June next year should it prove safe and effective in clinical trials, according to Spanish Minister of Health Salvador Illa. The deal could go a long way to inoculating the country’s 47 million population.
Illa made the announcement as part of a weekly briefing while presenting the Spanish Government’s “COVID-19 vaccination roadmap”. The plan is for the country’s health authorities to roll out the vaccine to immunise at least 15 million of the nation’s most vulnerable citizens before June next year.
With this, Spain follows in the footsteps of the wider European Union, which reserved at least 300 million and up to 400 million doses of AZ’s vaccine earlier in the year in August. Illa confirmed that this national move is part of the wider EU scheme.
