With a newly designed booth to reflect SHL’s Scandinavian roots, SHL not only brought to this year’s PDA a booth with a welcoming vibe, but also created much buzz around the newly introduced Penny™ Pen injector, as well as the Molly® 2.25 Auto Injector and Alubena™ – a program dedicated to connectivity based innovations for drug delivery systems.

The 3.0 mL multi-dose disposable pen injector, Penny™, garnered much attention as it is a device designed based on well-studied user behaviors (in the diabetes area) and has had outstanding test results across the board. The device offers several advantages, including variable and/or set doses and is designed for large-scale manufacturing. Furthermore, Penny™ also allows for full FTO (Freedom to Operate) and a short time to market if a pre-configured device is chosen.

While Penny™ was the star of the show, the Molly® 2.25 auto injector also caught many customer’s eyes as its predecessor, the Molly® Auto Injector (with a standard 1.0mL PFS) was already a well-known industry benchmark for its ultra-compact design and simple two-step operation. Needless to say, the growing demand for larger volume injections was also a factor that led to the interests.

Mats Persson, SHL’s Executive Vice President of Commercial Operations & Business Development for Europe comments, “We are very excited by the number of inquiries made towards the various devices and new technologies we introduced this year. In addition, we were fortunate to have had the chance to engage with so many customers in deeper conversations to better understand their needs and the upcoming industry trends. Continuously learning and innovating to anticipate and meet customer needs is core to our beliefs, which is why we invest so much into critical industry events like the PDA.

Another major trending topic this year was connectivity. SHL introduced for the first time Alubena™— a program dedicated to connectivity based innovations for drug delivery systems with the goal of enhancing patient adherence.

As a quick summary, the recording unit combined with the auto injector device transfers injection data to a smartphone via Bluetooth, then to a secure cloud where the injection data can be safely retrieved by different smart devices, and customized information can be provided to different stakeholders such as patients, relatives and healthcare professionals. In short, the Alubena™ program will provide highly customizable and effortless connectivity solutions for drug delivery devices, to provide means for enhancing patient adherence, and thereby contributing to healthy outcomes.
