Sanofi is looking for a deal with unions in order to boost productivity by 20-25% at French plants over three years.

In a document, the company pledges to maintain a strong industrial presence in France through the deal that unions fear could cause job cuts.

The document also says that productivity of the company’s French industrial sites should be improved in order to reduce a gap with those of other Sanofi plants located in eastern Europe.

A Sanofi spokeswoman comments: “We want to preserve our competitiveness in France in a sustainable way. Only one negotiation process is currently underway at the level of pharmaceutical production in France, which excludes vaccines, animal health, biological products.”

The spokeswoman added that the company has hired more production staff in France this year than over previous years.

A first meeting with unions took place on September 29 to discuss the issue. Two other meetings are scheduled days before Sanofi unveils a five-year strategic review during an investor day in Paris.

More details are expected to be offered when Oliver Brandicourt, CEO of Sanofi, lays out his five-year strategic plan for Sanofi during the investor day. After he announced in July a plan to reorganise the company into five operating groups, the company claimed it will no have significant jobs cuts.

Brandicourt told union members that the costs of French manufacturing operations were a drag on earnings and that he intended to act on the issue.
