Mike Paling, chief executive and chairman of TBWA\Paling Walters has received an award for Outstanding Contribution to Pharmaceutical Marketing for achievements in the business over four decades.

Mike received the lifetime achievement ‘Judge’s Award’ at the recent Pharmaceutical Marketing Excellence Awards (PMEAs).

Described by colleagues as “well respected, a great coach, and a real people person”, Mike’s leadership at TBWA\Paling Walters has helped it provide excellent healthcare communications, creative and strategic services as the business evolved over the years.

In his 40 year career, 30 of which have been spent running what is now TBWA\Paling Walters, Mike has applied his knowledge of healthcare and consumer creative skills to build communications which have generated real response from audiences.

This approach is central to the agency today, and has resulted in many campaigns which have won awards and lifted product sales.

The start of 2011 sees Mike hand over the running of TBWA\Paling Walters to Andy Hayley, the managing director, but will remain in a non-executive chairman’s role where he will advise and support the agency.

Mike commented: “The agency has always been about ensuring our creative product is of the best quality and relevant to its audience. Andy is well placed to take the agency forward into a challenging and changing marketplace where creative ideas need to work regardless of media to help bring about competitive advantage for our clients.”

Andy says Mike is a ‘true mentor’, and adds he: “leads by example and leaves me in total confidence about leading the agency into its next incarnation. I enjoy working with him and am very much looking forward to growing TBWA\Paling Walters’ strategic and creative offering.”

Paling’s success is based on his understanding of people, concludes Andy.

“The way Mike listens and understands colleagues let’s them play to their strengths, and provides a great environment for nurturing talent and sharing knowledge.”

Mike is immensely proud of the agency today, the business he has built and of the work he and his colleagues have done over the years.

“I am overwhelmed at the honour bestowed, but it really belongs to everyone at our agency and all those that have been involved the last 30 years who have helped shape TBWA\Paling Walters.

“I would like to thank everyone for their support and friendship and wish everyone well in their careers and lives in the future.”
