Medicinal cannabis company Spectrum makes first shipment into UK

Medicinal cannabis company Spectrum Europe has made its first shipment of cannabis into the UK, making it one of the first companies to successfully import legal medicinal cannabis into Britain.

In November 2018, the UK Government allowed doctors to prescribe unlicensed cannabis-based medicinal products to British patients with an unmet need that cannot be met by licensed products.

Yet very few British patients have been able to legally access medicinal cannabis so far, due in large part to the complex regulatory process patients must go through to get the drug.

A similarly complex process has hindered cannabis companies from importing and supplying medicinal cannabis to patients in the UK.

The successful shipment thus comes as a triumph for Spectrum, who were able to navigate the regulatory process and import medicinal cannabis into the UK from Germany. Spectrum is now active in Denmark, Germany, Spain, Poland, Czech Republic and the UK.

In making the shipment, Spectrum joins rival Tilray who made their first medicinal cannabis shipment in June 2019.

Dr Mark Ware, Chief Medical Officer, Spectrum Europe, commented: “We are delighted to have imported our first shipment of medicinal cannabis to the UK, making us one of the first pharmaceutical companies to successfully navigate the complex import process. Although this milestone is one to celebrate, there is a great deal more work to be done to help educate clinicians about medicinal cannabis.”
