A spokesperson from the Iranian foreign ministry has accused the US of refusing to deliver medicine to the country.

US sanctions currently do not prevent trade in medicine, but Iran say that Washington have practically halted its delivery. A Swiss financial channel usually enables the trade.

Seyyed Abbas Mousavi, the spokesperson in questions, said: “We have been holding talks for three weeks with one of the countries in which we have financial resources, and they claim, emphasize and insist that the Americans are blocking this work and do not allow our resources in that country to enter into this channel so that we could use them in the current circumstances and purchase the items we need.

“As a result, we deem that their words and claims are nothing but exaggeration and deception as long as they are not taking practical measures and the obstacles are not removed. Despite their claim that the pharmaceutical items are exempted from sanctions, they have practically blocked the road, and even this Swiss channel that they have opened has limited resources.”

US sanctions on Iran have resumed since hostilities increased between the two countries. In January, The Trump administration assassinated Quds Force Commander General Qassam Soleimani and Iran responded by attacking US bases in Iraq.

While direct sanctions are not usually imposed on the medical industry of Iran, the pharmaceutical industry has always taken a hit due to most international banks not doing business with the country.
