InnoScot highlights NHS Scotland’s progress towards net zero healthcare

InnoScot Health has highlighted the contribution of NHS Scotland’s sustainability programme to the country’s wider transition towards a net zero economy, pointing to continued investment in low-carbon infrastructure across the health service.
Scotland has committed to achieving net zero emissions by 2040, with NHS Scotland reporting a 32% reduction in emissions since 2015/16 through measures including improved energy efficiency, fuel switching and investment in renewable technologies.
Health boards have introduced initiatives such as solar photovoltaic panels, air source heat pumps, LED lighting upgrades and battery energy storage systems to reduce energy consumption while lowering operating costs. More than half of NHS Scotland’s fleet cars have also transitioned to electric vehicles, with some health boards nearing full electrification.
InnoScot Health said collaboration between the NHS, industry and academic partners has played an important role in supporting the development and implementation of sustainable healthcare technologies.
Fiona Schaefer, Innovation Commercialisation Manager at InnoScot Health, said: “As the first UK health service to undertake a net zero pledge, NHS Scotland is focused on modernising its methods and infrastructure. It all serves to underline a fierce commitment to achieving climate change targets for both the environment and the economy.”
The organisation also highlighted projects including Design HOPES, which is supporting the development of sustainable healthcare products such as reusable textile theatre caps, and the Green Ward Toolkit, designed to help clinical and non-clinical teams implement environmentally sustainable practices.
InnoScot said continued collaboration across the healthcare sector would be essential to meeting Scotland’s long-term sustainability ambitions.
