Gilead Sciences has committed over $6.5m in grant funding towards improving science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) education, the company reports. The funds have been administered through the Gilead Foundation and primarily focused on initiatives around the San Francisco Bay Area.

“The Gilead Foundation’s commitments will help promote promising futures for students in the Bay Area and beyond with the goal of strengthening our local communities,” commented Keeley Wettan, senior vice president, Legal at Gilead and Gilead Foundation board member.

Since 2018, the Foundation has awarded over $150m in grant funding to 250 nonprofit organisations in the area, and across the US. Its recent commitments include:

  • A $1m grant to the Boys and Girls Clubs of America to support STEM programmes in schools in the Bay Area, Los Angeles, Maryland, Washington DC, New Jersey and North Carolina
  • A $500,000 grant to the San Mateo Foster City Education Foundation to also improve STEM education for school students in the district
  • A total investment of $5m to San Francisco State University to support student programming and a new Science and Engineering Innovation Centre (SEIC) – including providing state of the art research equipment and resources.

“STEM skills have become a necessity for the modern workforce across the country, but many students need better access to the educational experiences needed to grow these skills,” explained Wettan.

Gilead cited a projected shortage of 1.4 million skilled STEM workers in the US by 2030 as a key driver for the investment.
