London-based PR agency Firstlight has set up a new healthcare arm and appointed Pat Pearson to lead it.

He is the former managing director of healthcare at The Red Consultancy and was previously deputy MD at Ruder Finn and a media adviser at the Department of Health for the then Minister of State for Health Alan Milburn.

At Firstlight Pat will join forces with his Red former colleague, and Firstlight founder, Paul Davies and the two will jointly hold the role of managing director.

Pearson said the Firstlight was a ‘breakaway’ rather than a ‘start-up’.

“We’re moving away from the traditional inflexible agency model that struggles to keep pace with evolving client needs. Firstlight has a clear focus on providing clients with the right blend of expertise and seniority to meet the challenges being faced by healthcare organisations and patients today.”

Firstlight was set up in 2009 by Paul Davies, The Red Consultancy’s former head of corporate communications.

Discussing the agency’s new healthcare offering, Davies said: “We see this as a very logical step. Over the last couple of years we’ve concentrated on building a very different business to that of our peers.

“We’re now in a position to invest and expand the depth of our offer to clients across a range of sectors and we’re thrilled to have someone with Pat’s track record coming on board.”

The new healthcare practice will provide communications support for pharmaceutical, medical devices and healthcare not-for-profit clients.
