Deadly cancers are being financially left behind, new research claims

New research has revealed that some of the UK’s most deadly and prevalent cancers receive the least amount of charitable funding, raising urgent questions about how awareness and fundraising priorities are set.

The study, released by Jude, a leading bladder cancer charity, found that bladder cancer, despite being one of the most common and deadly cancers in the UK, receives disproportionately low levels of financial support. Each year, around 10,471 people are diagnosed with bladder cancer, yet it receives just £94 in charitable funding per case. The survival rate currently stands at only 46%.

In stark contrast, testicular cancer – one of the least prevalent major cancers, with just 2,376 cases annually – receives £5,354 per case in funding, despite having a significantly higher survival rate of 91%.

Bladder cancer’s relative invisibility in public health campaigns and media coverage is a key reason for the disparity, the charity argues. The findings coincide with the start of Bladder Cancer Awareness Month in May, and Jude is calling for greater visibility, conversation and funding.

“We need to bring it into the spotlight, start speaking plainly about the symptoms, and give it the funding it needs to improve outcomes. Right now, too many people are dying simply because it’s a topic we don’t want to talk about,” said Peony Li, founder of Jude.

She added that “bladder cancer deserves the same energy and visibility” as campaigns like Movember for prostate cancer and the Pink Ribbon Foundation for breast cancer.
