Amazon has entered the pharmaceutical market by launching ‘Amazon Pharmacy’ in India.

It is launching first in Bangalore, and may potentially be trialled in other cities. The Amazon Pharmacy offers prescription and over the counter drugs as well as basic health devices.

Amazon first entered pharmaceuticals in 2017, and bought the home pharmaceutical delivery service ‘PilPack’ in 2018. In January of this year, it trademarked ‘Amazon Pharmacy’ in the UK, Australia and Canada.

Amazon India released a statement on the launch: “This is particularly relevant in present times as it will help customers meet their essential needs while staying safe at home.”

This latest launch in India is part of a larger strategy to expand Amazon’s reach across the sub-continent. Amazon founder and Chief Executive Jeff Bezos had pledged in January to make major investments in India, adding that this century would be the “Indian Century.” The company has already invested $6 billion into the region.

He added: “We are investing to create a million new jobs here in India over the next five years. We’ve seen huge contributions from our employees, extraordinary creativity from the small businesses we’ve partnered with, and great enthusiasm from the customers who shop with us and we’re excited about what lies ahead.”

Amazon recently also entered Bangalore’s food market, trialling a meal delivery service back in May.
