The Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI) has announced that its Chief Executive Mike Thompson is to retire from his role by the end of this year.

His decision to leave the association marks the end of a three-year run beginning in March 2016, when stepped in to take up the mantle from Alison Clough, who had served as the acting Chief Executive for much of 2015.

Prior to this move, he served at major UK pharma firm GlaxoSmithKline as Seniuor Vice President of Global Commercial Strategy, the final role of a tenure last 20 years. During that time, he also serve as Commercial Strategy Head for Europe and a decade shouldering a range of senior sales and marketing positions in the UK Operating Company.

“This has been an extraordinary period to have had led the ABPI. Whilst the media has focussed on the challenges the country has faced, we can be proud of how we’ve used the dynamic to bring about positive change,” commented Thompson. “There is a lot more to say, particularly about the great people I’ve loved working with, but there will be time for that at the end of the year. I am making this announcement now so that there can be an open, and timely process to find my successor.”

The association announced that it would be recruiting for a replacement.
