Marketers turn their hand to sails at Regatta

The sixth annual PM Society Sailing Regatta got off to a crashing start last month, with fine weather conditions and one early retirement.

The pharma marketers fighting for the PM Society cup this year were RFA Advertising, PAN, Galderma, MedeConnect, Saatchi & Saatchi, OnMedica, SAS, Innovex, Doctors.net, MJL Advertising and IS Healthcare.

The event kicked off with an outdoor barbecue and live band at the Royal Air Force Yacht Club in Hamble Marina the night before, sponsored by OnMedica. Afterwards, the teams retired to the yachts to continue networking and to prepare for the challenging day ahead (and discuss race tactics).

Next morning started with well-deserved bacon butties – by which time it was clear that the weather was going to be kind. Following safety briefings on-board, the fleet set out for a familiarisation sail across to Cowes. The gentle force two sail across the Solent was a great way of ensuring the less experienced sailors had the time to acquaint themselves with the tasks (and language) of their yachts prior to the afternoon's racing.

Collision

But then near-disaster struck when an unrelated yacht rammed the OnMedica yacht, forcing its retirement from the day's activities. Thankfully all the crew were safe, and the other yachts found spaces for those forced to abandon ship.

After a full safety and race briefing, the fleet set off for the afternoon's racing in the Solent. The wind had built up by this stage and after careful consideration; the race was started with the Royal Yacht Squadron's race cannon.

After a degree of jostling for position on the line, all yachts headed off on the first exhilarating up-wind leg. Competing against other similar yachts meant very close racing where race planning, tactics and sail-trimming were key.

Effective crew-working

The conditions were challenging, with by now a significant breeze, and the teamwork on board the yachts was strong.

All in all the event proved a great way to build strong relationships on board, and a good day was had by all. The addition this year of name banners along the side of the yachts proved a step forward, heightening competition and showing everyone which companies they were racing against!

Following well-deserved post-race refreshments back at Hamble, the coveted PM Society cup was awarded to MedeConnect, who showed great teamwork and pulled out a convincing lead from the start. Special mention must also go to MJL Advertising, who completed the race with only one sail after the other ripped.
