Anti-smoking ad lights up Best of Health awards

Clear Marketing Communications has taken the top prize at the 2006 Best of Health Awards with a striking advert highlighting the impact of smoking on male fertility.

The Manchester-based agency's 'Smokers make poor swimmers' ad for anti-smoking group ASH beat all other entries to the awards, which highlight the best in healthcare advertising.

The campaign was one of only two given a Silver award in the Charity Advertising category – Edinburgh agency Family Advertising produced the other for Cancer Research UK promoting Scotland's smoking ban.

There were no 'Golds' awarded at this year's show, a decision the judges said they came to in spite of a very high standard of entries.

Chairman of the judges and vice-chairman and creative director of customer management and interactive marketing agency OgilvyOne Rory Sutherland said: "The lack of Golds suggests a toughening of judgment and a rise in standards, both of which are good for the industry.

"For all that, a kind of consensus did emerge on the best work on show – work which from my outsider's perspective seems to stand comparison with the best advertising created in any category elsewhere."

The awards, held this year in the grounds of Chelsea's Royal Hospital, showcase creativity in healthcare advertising across press, poster, TV, radio and new media.

This is the second year the awards have been organised by the IPA (Institute of Practitioners in Advertising), having previously been run for 10 years by HAAG (Healthcare Advertising Agencies Group).

Last year's overall winner Woolley Pau again took a number of special awards at this year's ceremony, winning best use of photography and best use of copywriting categories for Bristol-Myers Squibbs Perfalgan and Janssen-Cilags Ovex respectively.

Other notable winners included Saatchi and Saatchi Healthcare for their work on Lundbeck's Cipralex (best use of illustration) and German agency New Performance Werbeagentur GmbH for their New comer self-promotional piece (best use of art direction).
