The ABPI has appointed a new director of communications in Aileen Thompson, a former Vodaphone head who replaces Catherine Meadon in the role.
Reporting directly to ABPI chief executive Stephen Whitehead, Thompson will advise the board on various communication issues and will be responsible for its engagement with government, NHS, media, patient groups and the wider community.
Prior to joining the pharma body Thompson was interim director of communications at Innovate UK, where she operated alongside the company’s executive team heading up its comms function. She also previously worked for Vodafone UK and the Vodafone Group, where for eight years she stood as the corporate comms director and director of consumer, brand and enterprise media relations.
Thompson began her career working across a number of PR agencies including Burson-Marsteller and Weber Shandwick, before spending three years working as director of corporate communications at Kellogg’s Europe.
ABPI chief executive Stephen Whitehead says: “I am delighted by Aileen’s appointment at what is a critical juncture for our industry. Aileen’s vast communications and campaigning experience and her track record of successfully tackling difficult and sensitive issues across a range of industries will be hugely beneficial to the ABPI at a time when there are many issues and challenges on the table for our industry and I very much look forward to working with her.”
Thompson adds: “The health of the UK’s population touches all of our lives in one way or another. With the opportunities and challenges ahead, this is an exciting time to join the ABPI to represent and champion an industry that is central to the future shape of healthcare.”
