PR agency Edelman has appointed Stefan Stern director of strategy.

He will provide senior counsel to the agency’s clients across all industry sectors on strategic reputation management, focusing on the ‘intersection’ of business, media and society.

Stern previously worked for the Financial Times, where he was one of the newspaper’s best known commentators.

His role at Edelman will also see him contribute to the agency’s series of publications and support the generation of content on management topics.

Edelman’s UK chief executive Robert Phillips said: “Stefan brings not only first-class journalistic experience but also a genuine understanding of the business challenges faced by chief exeuctives and those who counsel them.

“Stefan understands first-hand the realities of the media context today – where traditional authority has collapsed and every company is a media company in its own right – and the implications for the way that business and brands operate in the wider stakeholder environment.”

Stern has been a journalist for 20 years, on a range of business titles. He worked on the BBC’s Money Programme in the 1990s, and later became features editor of Management Today magazine.

For the last four years he has been writing a weekly column on management for the Financial Times. He has won several awards for his work, most recently becoming journalist of the year in the Towers Watson 2010 awards.

He starts at the agency in August and is the second senior journalist to join Edelman this year, following this month’s appointment of former BBC global head of news Richard Sambrook as global chief content officer.
