Danish medical cannabis use rises as regulator reports no new safety signals

Use of medical cannabis increased substantially in Denmark during 2025, while the Danish Medicines Agency reported three suspected adverse-reaction cases and identified no new or changed safety signals.
The Agency received three reports relating to cannabis products supplied under Denmark’s medical cannabis pilot programme during the year. Two concerned suspected serious adverse reactions and one a suspected non-serious reaction. The Agency said the reported reactions were already known from approved medicines containing medical cannabis and did not prompt additional risk-minimisation measures.
In 2025, 22,410 prescriptions for medical cannabis products were dispensed to 2,465 patients, increases of 64% and 54%, respectively, compared with 2024.
The Danish Medicines Agency said the increase in use provided context for its safety monitoring, but cautioned that suspected adverse-reaction reports cannot be used to determine the incidence or overall safety of medical cannabis products. The products included in the programme have not been studied systematically in the same way as approved medicines.
The three reports received in 2025 related to treatment for neuropathic pain in two cases and appetite stimulation in one. The patients were aged between 21 and 82.
The Danish medical cannabis pilot programme, introduced in 2018, ended on 31 December 2025. From 1 January 2026, it was replaced by a permanent legal framework for medical cannabis.
The Agency said continued reporting remains important for identifying possible safety problems. Doctors have a specific reporting obligation for suspected adverse reactions to medical cannabis, while other healthcare professionals, patients and relatives can also submit reports.
STENOCARE chief executive Thomas Skovlund Schnegelsberg said the report provided useful information as Denmark moved from its pilot programme to permanent medical cannabis legislation.
