Probi marks 35 years of probiotic research

Probi is marking its 35th anniversary alongside a milestone of more than 300 scientific publications supporting the benefits of its clinically documented probiotic strain Lactiplantibacillus plantarum 299v (LP299V).

Founded in 1991 following research at Lund University, the company has focused on advancing understanding of the role of probiotics and other biotic products in supporting digestive, immune, metabolic, women’s, oral and cognitive health.

According to Probi, its overall portfolio is now supported by more than 450 scientific publications, making it one of the most extensively researched companies in the biotics sector.

The milestone follows Probi’s acquisition by Symrise in 2025, with the companies aiming to combine Probi’s research expertise with Symrise’s global development and commercial capabilities.

Isabelle Ducellier, Global Vice President, Health, Care & Wellness at Symrise said that joining the Symrise Group had created new opportunities for Probi to accelerate innovation and bring clinically proven biotic products to more people worldwide.

Ducellier added: “For 35 years, science has been the foundation of everything we do at Probi. Joining Symrise Group has given us an unprecedented opportunity to build on that legacy, accelerate innovation across the biotics category and bring clinically proven solutions to more people around the world.

“What began as a pioneering research project at Lund University in the 1980s has evolved into one of the industry’s most science-driven biotics companies.”

Recent developments include research in cognitive and metabolic health, expansion of women’s health products, strategic collaborations with BLIS Technologies and Clasado Biosciences, and the launch of the postbiotic ingredient Rham271h.

While probiotics continue to attract growing consumer interest, the company said its long-term focus has been on building clinical evidence to support the use of specific biotic strains for defined health applications.
