Kidney Research UK has announced an ambitious investment in the patient engagement platform Healthinote, developed by Cognitant Group, in a move aimed at transforming care for people living with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and other long-term conditions.
The investment will accelerate the rollout of the Kidney Essentials programme, a digital resource developed alongside with the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust. The platform delivers evidence-based, multi-language education materials produced to improve patient understanding and self-management of kidney disease, while reducing demand on NHS services.
Katherine Forbes, director of innovation and enterprise at Kidney Research UK, commented: “Healthinote gives patients free access to resources tailored to their needs, empowering them to take control of their care and improving both outcomes and efficiency.”
Initial results from the Kidney Essentials programme indicate a reduction in waiting times and necessary face-to-face consultations, which were key recommendations identified in Lord Dazi’s 2024 NHS reform report. The initiative also supports NHS England’s Core20PLUS5 framework by addressing health disparities, particularly among Black and South Asian communities who are at greater risk of CKD.
“This partnership is about creating equitable access to care. By integrating Kidney Essentials into NHS systems, we can provide consistent, personalised support for patients across the country,” added Tim Ringrose, CEO of Cognitant.
While aligning with wider NHS prevention strategies, the programme is anticipated to help identify and manage an estimated 1.2 million people currently living with undiagnosed CKD.
