Trump’s pick for the top job in the FDA moved one step closer to taking up the job when the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions voted in favour of his appointment, moving the confirmation into its final stage.
Members of the committee voted 14-9 in favour, with all republicans and two democrats voicing their faith in Scott Gottlieb’s candidacy for the job. Now all that is left between him and the Commissioner role is a final vote by the Senate floor.
Gottlieb has flown smoothly through the process since his original nomination, surviving intense scrutiny from both political parties throughout his hearings and assuaging concerns over partisanship and conflicts of interest given his background in the industry by announcing he would be severing these past ties upon his ascension into the role.
There was still division amongst the voting senators, with Senator Patty Murray voicing her doubt despite Gottlieb’s moves to allay fears over his standing: “I have grown increasingly concerned whether [Dr Gottlieb] can lead the FDA in an unbiased way, given his unprecedented industry ties.”
However, Senator Lamar Alexander, and indeed the majority of those who voted, believed he was the man for the job, noting: “We need people in government with experience in the types of industries and agencies and activities that they’re in charge of.”
The vote is expected to proceed to the Senate floor shortly.
