New research has been undertaken to help more women reach senior roles in the pharmaceutical industry.

The study, carried out by the Healthcare Businesswoman's Association (HBA) and consultants Booz Allen Hamilton, involved senior executives from 19 of the top 50 life sciences companies in the US and Europe.

The study is the first of its kind, and has been welcomed by industry leaders. The research defined six environmental factors essential to allow women to compete for the executive roles in healthcare that are predominantly taken by men.

These conditions included unambiguous support for women from senior leaders, a merit-based culture without reference to gender, programme metrics to track progress, customised development programmes, career and work flexibility models, and recruiting efforts that include a diverse team and diversity targets.

It also polled 237 mid-level managers, and sourced the staffing and program data from the HR databases of 12 companies.

Leaders at Wyeth and Sanofi Aventis welcomed the findings, and say they are of great importance to an industry striving for diversity in its leadership.
