The World Health Organization reported the largest daily increase in COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began.
Over the weekend there were 230,370 new cases in 24 hours, breaking the previous record on 10 July of 228,102. Deaths remain at about 5,000 a day.
This means the number of global cases is nearing 13 million with 565,000 deaths since the pandemic began in November.
In the US, Florida has set the new daily case record, reaching 15,299 over a 24 period between 11-12 July. This was around 25% of the US’s total daily infections. Florida has proven particularly vulnerable due to the high amount of tourists it has seen since it lifted lockdown restrictions in May while also having an elderly population who are more at risk of mortality from the virus. If Florida was its own country it would rank fourth worst in the world for new cases.
More than 40 hospitals in the state say their intensive care facilities are at full capacity. Dr Anthony Fauci has criticised the state’s implementation of lockdown, and said the easing of restriction was not supported by the data on cases or deaths.
