The BioIndustry Association (BIA) has said that the UK is clearly the must-go-to location for regenerative medicine research and development.

Its new booklet “Realise Returns from the UK’s regenerative medicine and cell therapy industry” showcases some of the leading regenerative medicine firms in the UK which include ReNeuron and Cell Medica, and praises those developing exciting and world-leading approaches to stroke and cancer care.

Steve Bates the BIA chief executive, said: “The UK is fortunate to have not only world leading research but also cutting edge companies who are well set to deliver on the promise of regenerative medicine.

“In the UK, research in this key field of 21st century medicine is supported by both the government and the public. That is why I believe breakthroughs across a range of unmet medical needs including diabetes, cardiac disease, cancer, and stroke will emerge from the regenerative medicine community in the UK.”

Public funders have now committed support to the product development pipeline mentioned in the booklet, such as the Cell Therapy Catapult – a London, Guy’s Hospital-based centre that provides various healthcare services.

Professor Chris Mason, University College London and chair, BIA Cell Therapy and Regenerative Medicine Advisory Committee added: “The global cell therapy industry is at the important inflection point between spirited pioneering and true commercialisation.

“The UK leads the world in healthcare, finance and stem cell R&D. The integration of these major assets, combined with robust government support for regenerative medicine, makes the UK the prime location to invest in cell therapy as it rapidly grows into a multibillion pound sector on a par with pharma and biotech.”

The BioIndustry Association was founded over 20 years ago at the infancy of biotechnology, and is the trade association for innovative enterprises involved in UK bioscience. Members include emerging and more established bioscience companies; pharma firms; academic, research and philanthropic organisations; and service providers to the bioscience sector.

The BIA booklet is available here from the BIA website.
