Four teenagers living with autoimmune type 1 diabetes (aT1D) have released a single aimed at raising awareness of the condition and challenging public misconceptions. The song, Rise Up, was written and performed by Ella, Lola-Belle, Olivia and Finley under the band name 1Type. It is now available on Spotify and accompanied by a music video.
The project, supported by Sanofi and Stagecoach Performing Arts, brings together music and lived experience to highlight the daily challenges faced by young people managing aT1D. The track also features spoken-word artist Duke Al Durham, who lives with the condition. Sanofi has committed to matching profits from the single with a donation to charities supporting those living with aT1D.
This initiative follows a recent survey commissioned by Sanofi of 200 UK adults with aT1D, which found that 91% reported an impact on mental health and 98% said the condition affects their physical health.
“Creating this song was a powerful experience,” the band said. “We hope it starts a conversation and helps others feel less alone.”
In the UK, an estimated 400,000 people live with aT1D including around 36,000 under the age of 19. The condition is not caused by lifestyle factors and is typically managed with insulin therapy and glucose monitoring.
