Siemens Healthineers has opened a new Centre of Excellence for Immunoassay Instrument Research & Development in Swords, Ireland.
Over 10m euros have so far been invested in the new Centre, and further investments are planned in future. It is located close to existing manufacturing operations and has created over 65 highly skilled engineering jobs to date. The experts will work on worldwide R&D collaborations, allowing for innovative instrument design and manufacturing.
The Centre aims to drive forward the creation of laboratory instruments for diagnostic tests. These involve instruments to help detect infectious diseases, blood disorders and cancer. The Centre will continue the development and optimisation of Atellica instruments, which are immunoassay and chemistry analysers.
The opening of the new site was performed by Darragh O’Brien, minister for transport, climate, environment and energy for Ireland, as well as Lohan, CEO of IDA Ireland. It comes as part of a recently completed multi-year investment plan that began in 2023 and was supported by IDA, the Irish government’s investment promotion agency.
Siemens Healthineers has also received a training and development grant from IDA. The grant is intended to finance a multi-million euro upskilling programme, improving Ireland’s capacity to support work in engineers, operations and leadership.
“For nearly 60 years, this site has delivered world-class diagnostic instruments to hospitals and laboratories globally,” said Patrick Grimes, global head of hardware engineering R&D at Siemens Healthineers Swords. “Now, by aligning research and development with production under one roof, we are accelerating the pace of discovery and delivery. This centre is a symbol of our commitment to shaping the future of diagnostics where science, technology and human ingenuity come together to improve lives globally.”
