Bernhard Scheuble has stepped down as chief executive of German pharma company Merck KGaA, disagreements with the company's owners thought to be behind the resignation.
The company is controlled by the Merck family council, and Scheuble's frustration with Merck's failure to build a strong presence in the US is said to be a cause of friction.
Dr Michael Roemer has been named as the new chief executive and chairman of the company, having been promoted from his previous role as head of production, engineering, purchasing and other key business functions.
Elmar Schnee has been appointed as head of the company's pharmaceutical division, expanding his existing role which currently covers prescription medicines only.
