PPRS talks stall

Talks on the future of pharmaceutical pricing scheme the PPRS have stumbled into trouble, after it emerged a major part of the new scheme will not be ready for the January 2009 deadline.
The delay centres on the issue of off-patent medicines, which has emerged as a bone of contention between government and industry after months of tense confidential talks.
The Department of Health will now hold a public consultation on "loss of exclusivity", and says it is aware the industry has "particular concerns" about the issue.
Discussions are still ongoing, preventing much comment from either side.
But in a joint statement the Department and industry association the ABPI said: "[We] have notified PPRS members that those particular provisions [relating to off-patent medicines] will be delayed by at least three months and will not apply from 1 January as originally planned."
