The past week has seen promising developments in the race to find treatments for COVID-19; Jubilant and The Wistar Institute are collaborating on a treatment to reduce the virus’ severity in patients, the DoD is funding Faron’s research into a potential drug, and Celltrion’s Phase III trial of an anti-COVID respiratory medicine has yielded positive results.

1. Bharat Biotech advises certain groups against taking its COVID-19 vaccine – Published 19/01/2021

India’s vaccine developer Bharat Biotech has advised a number of groups to avoid taking its homegrown COVID-19 vaccine, Covaxin.

2. US Department of Defense selects Faron for $6.1m COVID-19 research funding – Published – 18/01/21

The US Department of Defense (DoD) has selected Faron Pharmaceuticals’ HIBISCUS study to receive $6.1 million of funding from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act.

3. Jubilant and The Wistar Insitute collaborate on potential COVID-19 treatment – Published 18/01/21

Jubilant Therapeutics, a biopharmaceutical company advancing small molecule modulators to address unmet medical needs in oncology and autoimmune diseases, has announced a collaboration with biomedical research non-profit The Wistar Institute to evaluate the ability of Peptidyl Arginine Deiminase 4 (PAD4) inhibitors to reduce the clinical severity of COVID-19.

4. Celltrion announces positive top-line results from COVID-19 treatment trial – Published on 14/01/21

Celltrion Group has announced that top-line results from its global Phase II/III clinical trial of CT-P59, an anti-COVID-19 monoclonal antibody treatment candidate, show the drug significantly reduced the risk of coronavirus-related hospitalisation and oxygenation.

5. COVID-19 vaccine data leaked online by hackers, EMA says – Published 14/01/21

The EMA has confirmed that data relating to COVID-19 medicines and vaccines that was stolen by hackers in December have been leaked on the internet.
