Another recall for generics manufacturer American Regent, facility updates from Sanofi, Beximco, Lanxess and Anomatic, plus a new general manager for Amylin’s West Chester plant.
Sanofi is undertaking a A$14 million ($15m) expansion of a plant in Queensland, Australia, that will add production capacity for softgel capsules. The facility in Victoria will supply softgels to Australia and other Asia-Pacific markets, according to Invest in Australia. Sanofi employs 450 people at the facility at the moment.
Yet another recall of an injectable pharmaceutical product has been announced by generics company American Regent, this time for calcium gluconate 10% in 100ml pharmacy bulk packages. The product has been called back because of the presence of particulate matter, which has been the cause of around a dozen recalls at the firm in the last year.
Bangladeshi drugmaker Beximco Pharmaceuticals has been awarded GMP certification for a manufacturing facility at Tongi, Dhaka, which will be used to supply generics for EU markets. The plant makes tablets and capsules, as well as sterile eye drop formulations, and was accredited after an inspection by Austria’s regulatory authority.
US drugmaker Amylin Pharmaceuticals has appointed Robert Mackay, formerly with Eli Lilly, as general manager of its manufacturing facility in West Chester, Ohio. The plant is used to manufacture Amylin’s long-acting release formulation of diabetes drug exenatide, which is currently in phase III testing.
German chemicals group Lanxess is doubling capacity at a menthol-producing factory in Krefeld-Uerdingen to meet increasing demand for menthol and related ingredients in food and pharmaceutical applications. Completion of the project is scheduled for the first half of 2012. Ingredients made at the plant – including thymol, crude menthol and D,I-menthol – are used in pharmaceuticals for taste-masking and to provide a cooling effect in topical balms.
US packaging specialist Anomatic Corp is building a new 65,000 sq.ft. manufacturing facility in New Albany, Ohio, which when complete will create around 185 jobs. Anomatic, which specialises in anodised aluminium packaging for the medical, pharmaceutical personal care and cosmetics sectors, says it has spent around $8.7 million on the plant.
