Healthcare agency Onyx Health has launched its own blog site and online community dedicated to women’s health.

In what the firm is saying is a first for a healthcare PR company, Onyx Health is also running the UK’s biggest ever health survey to identify the health issues that concern today’s women.

‘A Snapshot of Women’s Health’ has been created to identify women’s attitudes toward, vascular and aging health, as well as reproductive, hormonal and sexual health.

The survey which is open to women of all ages aims to provide an overview of the issues and concerns women have about their health.

Karen Winterhalter, the founder of ‘We Understand Women’s Health’ which is the blog site behind the survey, says: “One of the challenges in women’s health at the moment is that there is significant investment and awareness initiatives around the major disease areas such as breast cancer, however other conditions often considered less significant do not receive the same prominence.

“Our initial pilot survey undertaken with 200 women identified that they were more concerned about the risk of cardiovascular disease and obesity rather than breast cancer and that came from people young and old.  We are now taking this survey out much further so we can provide data from 12 regions in the UK.”

Winterhalter is also aiming to create an online community, allowing women to support each other through a diverse range of health issues from contraception, conception to the menopause, painful and heavy periods to osteoporosis, overactive bladder, diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

“As we establish these communities further we want to be able to work closer with the members. Many have already signed up to participate in further market research,” explains Winterhalter.

She adds: “Healthcare PR is really moving on from the large scale campaigns, to focus in on relevance. The real opportunity for us and the clients, who may want to partner with us, is the ability to provide relevant information to a woman in our community when she needs it rather than relying on large scale campaigns to do this which is a much better way of doing things.”
