Hurricane Florence lashed across North America’s Southeast coast in mid-September, bringing with it 20-30 inches of rain and winds greater than 100 miles per hour. While it was ultimately not as devastating as originally forecast, it was still enough to force pharma operations over the affected area to a halt. Some of the industry’s biggest names were hit, including Pfizer, MSD, GSK, Novartis and Novo Nordisk.  Ultimately, despite disruption, there have been no reports of lasting damage, but affected citizens will still be faced with the aftermath of the storm. You can read the full story on our front page.

September also saw a wave of strong data in the treatment of psoriasis at the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology 2018 in Paris. Leaders in the field stepped up to the plate, including Bristol-Myers Squibb, Janssen, Novartis, Celgene and UCB, with promising findings in a range of disease sub-groups. You can find a full report on the biggest surprises from the event on page 8.

FlyPharma chalked up another successful show in September when it touched down in Miami for its first ever US show, bringing together experts and executives from across the pharma air transport business to share the latest developments and forward-thinking ideas. You can find a full review of the event on page 13.

Elsewhere in the issue, you can find an analysis of current mental health treatment in the context of health economics and outcomes research, and a look into how issues with drug pricing and access affecting NHS patients today could be aided by the use of biosimilar treatments. We also have a focus on hearing loss and inner ear disorders, authored by Sensorion CEO Nawal Ouzren, and Niamh Ri Ruari’s personal account of life with the rare condition Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis.
