International pharma company Nordic Pharma has announced that its Lacrifill treatment for dry eye disease has received European Conformity (CE) mark approval. This will allow the company to introduce the product across European markets within a few months and expand its global footprint.

Lacrifill is a novel treatment which keeps eyes bathed in their own natural tears to manage dry eye disease. By occluding the canalicular system, hyaluronic acid gel blocks tear drainage, maintaining moisture in the eyes. Administration consists of a procedure to fill the canalicular system, delivering effects up to six months.

Dry eye disease is a prevalent condition, affecting up to 30% of the European population. It is difficult to manage, especially in the context of ocular surgeries such as cataract and LASIK surgery. Symptoms include blurred vision, eyes appearing red and feeling sore, burning and gritty.

The imminent European launch follows the release of Lacrifill in the US in October last year. Availability and distribution in Europe have yet to be confirmed.

“Receiving CE mark approval for Lacrifill is an important milestone for Nordic Pharma and adds to our commitment to innovative ophthalmic therapies in Europe,” said Charlotte Phelps, chief executive officer of Nordic Pharma.
