A new progesterone-based treatment aimed at preventing miscarriage has been launched across the UK, following a major clinical trial that demonstrated a significant improvement in live birth rates.
Prometrium, a 400mg soft vaginal capsule developed by Besins Healthcare, is now available in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. It is designed for use by women experiencing early pregnancy bleeding and those with a history of recurrent miscarriage.
The launch follows the success of the PRISM trial, which assessed the impact of progesterone therapy on women with early pregnancy complications. The study found that women who received progesterone were significantly more likely to carry their pregnancies to term. Among women with three or more previous miscarriages, the risk of miscarriage dropped by 28%, and live birth rates rose to 72%, compared to 57% in the placebo group.
Miscarriage, defined as the loss of pregnancy before 24 weeks, affects around 250,000 pregnancies in the UK each year. Recurrent miscarriage – the loss of three or more pregnancies – impacts about 1% of couples trying to conceive.
Irina Spirieva, general manager of Besins Healthcare UK & Ireland, said: “We are committed to working alongside the NHS and healthcare professionals to improve access, awareness and outcomes for women facing the uncertainty of early pregnancy complications.”
Prometrium adds to the company’s range of hormonal therapies, which also target menopause, endometriosis, reproductive health and testosterone deficiency.
