The EMEA says it received 51 new drug applications in 2004, a figure which represents a significant rise over the preceding two years, and one which holds out hope that the industry's productivity is bouncing back.

In 2002 the European agency received just 31 applications, rising slightly the following year to 39 but these years represented two of the leanest for the pharma industry and the EMEA, which is dependent on pharma funding.

The EMEA says it expects 2005 to show further improvement, rising marginally to 52 applications and then 56 the following year.

The agency warned that the emergence of new technologies meant demands on its experts would also grow.

The volume of applications and associated tasks is expected to rise substantially in 2006. The complexity of applications is also expected to increase, in particular due to the growing number of applications and requests for scientific advice relating to emerging therapies and new technologies.

The EMEA management board hopes to secure an 8.5% increase in its budget to E119 million for 2006 to pay for the predicted increase in workload.
