A new controlled circulation journal Trends in Urology and Men’s Health has been launched to help promote doctors’ awareness of the area.

A sister journal to the British Journal of Urology International (BJUI), the new journal is aimed at a range of healthcare professionals who care for men’s health including GPs, nurses and specialists.

Trends in Urology and Men’s Health is published by Wiley, which also publishes Prescriber and Pharmafocus.

Trends editor Professor Roger Kirby says: “Men die earlier than women, they consult their GP less often and generally pay less attention to their health. There are no national screening programmes for men and no regular consultations driven by family planning or pregnancy. As a result, opportunities for healthcare professionals to intervene and support men’s health are more limited.”

Prof Kirby says the central campaigning message will be to reduce premature deaths in men, and improve quality of life for all.

The journal will aim to attract contributors who are the best communicators in the specialities of urology, cardiovascular medicine and diabetes and other relevant specialities.

He adds: “In terms of men’s health, we will be emphasising the importance of men helping themselves by lifestyle change and more focus on their own wellness. Instead of an attitude of ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ with regard to their body we would advocate a ‘if you look after it, it won’t break’ approach. We will be actively promoting the ways and means of achieving sustainable lifestyle change for healthier living.”

Journal business development manager Caroline Phillips says: “Women’s health has benefited from a great deal of attention in recent years and has a high profile, we thinks its time men’s health moved into the spotlight.”

“The journal provides an exciting new opportunity for pharma to communicate with healthcare professionals in the men’s health area both through advertising and medical educational activity”.
