Lundbeck has launched a campaign aiming to raise awareness of insomnia and sleep problems.

'Sleep well, Live well ' is described by the company as a "service to medicine".

A tie-in report by the Future Foundation found that downplaying sleep issues keeps up to 57% of people with frequent problems from consulting their GP for help.

"We were intrigued to find that it 's more acceptable to be tired than drunk and not perform well," said lead researcher Addween Sacha.

"This trend is likely to continue unless we raise awareness of the importance of addressing poor sleep."

Young women were found to be the main group experiencing sleep problems due to stress, while older people, who report sleep problems more frequently, were found to be least likely to complain.

Dr Adrian Williams of the London Sleep Centre warned that long-term sleep problems potentially increase the risk of serious health problems such as depression and a lowered immune system.

"Insomnia is a clinical condition that should be taken seriously, not ignored," he said, adding that people who experience problems should visit their GP for advice."

Website

The campaign website contains information on sleep problems, a sleep quality test and advice on treatments available from the GP.

It also carries a section for UK health professionals. The section on treatments includes Lundbeck 's Circadin, a melatonin, and benzodiazepines such as temezepam and Roche 's Mogadon.

Lundbeck markets sleep disorder drug Circadin, indicated for the short-term treatment of primary insomnia characterised by poor quality of sleep in patients who are aged 55 or over.

There are currently no national UK guidelines for primary care on the management of insomnia and passive relaxation is currently the most popular way for people to deal with a sleep deficit.

1980s TV presenter Selina Scott is endorsing the campaign, which coincides with World Sleep Day on 20 March.
