The Louvre taken down references to the Sacklers, the billionaire owners of Purdue Pharma.

The largest art gallery in the world has taken down all mentions of the Sackler family which include a plaque acknowledging their donations and references to ‘the Sackler Wing,’ in which the museum’s collection of ‘oriental antiquities’ is housed.

The gallery is reported to have taken down the plaque while the Sackler Wing was closed on the 8th and 9th of July. The Louvre has also covered signs pointing to the Sackler Wing with grey tape. The wing of the museum has been called the Sackler Wing since 1997. All references to the Sackler Wing have also been taken down from the Louvre’s website.

The move comes after the Tate group and the Guggenheim said they would not accept any more donations from the Sackler family. The Sackler Trust and the Dr Mortimer and Theresa Sackler Foundation later halted all donations.

The backlash against the Sacklers comes after Photographer Nan Goldin led a campaign against the family over the role they played in fuelling the opioid epidemic in the United States.

Goldin’s group PAIN commented in an emailto the New York Times: “Museums and cultural institutions must maintain their integrity. They should not bear the name that is synonymous with the opioid crisis. Our museums belong to the artists and to the public, not to the donors.”
