Lilly is sponsoring Olympic hurdler Colin Jackson’s ‘Go Dad Run’, a new 5k run for men to raise awareness of men’s health issues.
The inaugural ‘Go Dad Run’ is to be held in Anglesey on Father’s Day (16th June for the UK) where men will walk, jog or run 5k to raise money for Prostate Cancer UK, whilst also raising awareness of health issues affecting men.
There is in addition a one mile ‘Fun Run’ open to everyone (men, women and children) held at the same time.
Men’s health issues are often neglected and there are fewer health services directly targeted at men, with recent research showing that they visit their family doctor 20% less frequently than women.
Men also have a reduced life expectancy compared to women whilst also being 69% more likely than women to die of cancer, and 63% more likely to have a heart attack.
Speaking about Lilly’s sponsorship, Colin Jackson said: “We are delighted to have Lilly UK on board sponsoring the first ‘Go Dad Run’ event. Together we share a common objective to improve men’s health and encourage all men to seek regular medical advice and early treatment for disease and injury.
“We hope that staging ‘Go Dad Run’ on Father’s Day each year will enable men to think about their health whilst also raising money and having a fun and entertaining family day.”
Stewart Pearce, Lilly UK men’s health business unit manager, said: “We’re really pleased to be involved with Go Dad Run. There is a clear need for health campaigns focusing on men and an event like this is a fantastic idea.”
He added that Lilly UK recently launched its own men’s health campaign focused on raising awareness of erectile dysfunction and benign prostatic hyperplasia.
The firm’s drug Cialis has indications for both of these conditions, receiving a licence for BPH last year. Lilly’s web address for its disease awareness campaign features prominently on the Go Dad Run website.
Lilly hopes that by sponsoring events linked to disease therapies it caters for – whilst also having its disease awareness campaign linked to the site – will help increase diagnosis and prescriptions for medicines aimed at men’s health issues, such as erectile dysfunction and BPH.
